The crew of the USS Justice (NCC-1721) from 23rd century were lost in time going from 2263 to 2363. Along with the RIS Bouteina it launched an attack on a planet held by a Mirak-dominated pirate cartel to both recover some of the crew of the Marianela and to privateer from the cartel by outright capturing the planet. The GHS Marianela began her career as a Prime Industries sectorial flagship before being captured by the Gorn Hegemony.
A person who does so on behalf of a sovereign government is called a privateer. A pirate is a person who commits acts of robbery on another vessel either in space or traditionally at sea.
